Russian River winter steelhead

January 21st, 2008

The winter run of steelhead on the Russian River seems to peaking during last couple weeks since our big storm here. Although this has not been a great run compared to rivers farther north, I did manage to get out today - beautiful, clear, sunny and calm. Water was still running a little murky, and I was rewarded with one nice ‘half pounder’ juvenile steelie. Hooked one other, but shook off after peeling off a few yards of fly line while I fumbled to set the hook.
